Warts and all

 ‘Verruca’는 1555~1565년에 처음 기록되었으며, ‘wart, excrescence, hillock, steep place 또는 fault, failing’을 의미하는 라틴어 ‘verrūca’로부터 유래되었다. ‘height, top’을 의미하는 원시 인도유럽어(PIE word)로부터 기원하였다는 의견이 있고, 비교언어학적으로 고대 아일랜드어 ferr (better), 산스크리트어 varṣman- (height, top), 리투아니아어 viršus (summit)나 러시아어 verx (top, upper part)와 비교될 수 있다.  ‘Wart’는 고대 영어 ‘wearte’, 게르만 조어 ‘wartǭ’로부터 유래되었다. 또한, 고대 스칸디나비아어 varta, 고대 프리지아어 warte, 네덜란드어 wrat, 고대 고지 독일어 warza, 독일어 warze와 같은 어원으로 생각되고 있다.

 현재에도 사용되는 ‘wart’가 포함된 영어 문구로 1930년 서머셋 모음의 소설 <Cakes and Ale>에도 나타나는 표현인 ‘warts and all(나쁜 점들까지 모두)’은 Oliver Cromwell과 자신의 초상화를 그린 화가 Peter Lely 사이에 관련된 일화에서 유래되었다. ‘Paint me as I am - warts and all.’ Cromwell은 그 화가에게 말했다. ‘or I will not pay you for the picture.’ 이렇듯 유명한 관용구인 ‘warts and all’은 1763년 출간된 Walpole의 ‘Anecdotes of painting in England, with some account of the principal artists’에 기록된 바 있다.
