Thymus

비잔틴의 의사 Aëtius of Amida (502-575)는 성기 사마귀에 대해 다음과 같이 기록하였다.

 The term Thymus arises from the similarity to the tips of the plant of the same name, which grows in the mountains. This complaint occurs in particular around the anus and the pudenda and between the legs.

 로마인들은 성기 사마귀가 난잡한 성생활의 결과로 발생한다는 것을 알고 있었으며, Martial(40-104)의 <Epigrams>에서처럼 많은 풍자 시들이 쓰여졌다. 중세에도 성기 사마귀는 여전히 존재하여, 13세기 Guglielmo da Saliceto (1210–1277)와 Hugh Lanfranc of Milan (1245–1306)의 저술에서 성기 사마귀에 대해 묘사한 글을 발견할 수 있다.
