Venereal poison

었다. 특히 유럽에서는 15세기 말 매독의 폭발적 발생은 성기 질환에 대한 새로운 관심을 유발하였다. 매독, 임질 그리고 성기 사마귀와 같은 많은 성기 감염증은 John Hunter (1728–1793)에 의해 이후 세기에 잘 규정된 것처럼 다 동일한 ‘성병독(venereal poison)’으로 여겨졌다. 이러한 ‘venereal poison’설은 Hunter를 포함한 많은 의사들에게 항문성기 사마귀를 매독의 한 증상으로 취급하게 하였다.

 The venereal disease arises from a poison which it is produced by the disease and it is capable of again producing a similar disease...it has different powers of contamination...when it is applied to the human body it possesses a power of propagating or multiplying itself.
